Brown Fused Alumina (BFA) is produced in an electric arc furnace at temperatures in excess of 2000°C. BFA is the result of fusing bauxite to reduce the silica levels and forming a material with a higher alumina content. it's characterized by its high hardness, good toughness and shape in particles.
BFA is used in the production of bonded abrasives (grinding wheels), coated abrasives (sandpaper and cloth), blasting grain, polishing compounds, refractories, ceramics, and other applications.Abrasive tools made of it are suitable for grinding metals of high-tensile strength such as carbon steel, general purpose alloy steel, malleable cast-iron and hard bronze etc.
